Direct TV

Their commercials are not in the lower 50% of all commercials... i especially like the scene when the "wife" taps on the huge aquarium only to have it bust open and wash her across the entire restaurant.

What raises these commercials above the bar, however, is the presence of Hannah Davis as the Direct TV genie. This girl is more than beautiful. She is unique.

At the end of the commercial, she's there holding the TV set and looking at the camera with those hypnotic and luminous eyes.

Ms Davis is only on screen for about a second and leaves one wanting just one more look at her! She is a painting that no artist imagined yet.

Of course, when the commercial is over, she is forgotten (until her lovely moment flashes across the screen again).

Please ATT - STOP!!!

If I were inclined to switch my cable company, and if the new company allowed you to DVR 25 shows at a time, showed free first run movies and charged only $15 per month, I would find it difficult to even consider a company who would subject the public to what HAS to be the most annoying champagne since Timmy yelled, "Extra! Extra!" for Long Chevrolet (old-timey Chicago reference).

I can practically smell these stinkers coming. And these commercials show just how horrible stage parents can be in forcing their kids to snootily say, "Back in my day..."

Each horrendously crafted slot causes new convulsions of disgust from all of us gathered before the television and we can't hit that fast-forward button fast enough.

So, AT&T, please please STOP!!

"Excited for your first day?"

Ugh!! I'm such a sucker! I know that I am being completely manipulated here... but I can't resist this ad! It's not the stupid Subaru or the milquetoast dad - as a matter if fact, I think he's acting in an extremely unsafe manner!! What gets to me every time is this little girl's look of doubt + bravery. Oh my gosh, she's cute and what an actress!! I don't know who she is, but I'm waiting to see her movie debut! You go, girl.

I Guarantee It

Okay George Zimmer is not astoundingly good looking. He's no Sean Connery. But darned if he isn't sort of spicy sexy.

Who is George Zimmer? He is the founder of and (more importantly) spokesperson for Men's Warehouse.

I love these commercials. With the handsome young "studs" modeling the snappy suits and Mr. Zimmer's gravelly voice describing men's fashion. The climactic moment of each of these commercials is when he growls, "You're going to like the way you look... I guarantee it."

Maybe it's the voice. Maybe it's the extreme close up. Most of all, I think it's that confidence he exudes with his repeated assurances. You can almost hear him leaning in close to you and saying, "You're going to love the way this feels. I guarantee it," and somehow, you believe him!

Mini Movies

Every commercial is a miniature movie - a short film. Some of these really feel like it too. When I go to visit my mom in Florida I often see new commercials that are local. This can be annoying at election time and even appalling as in the "ride it like a Ford" commercials or the headache producing repetitive lawyer commercials (the worst of which is Rubenstein).

On my most recent visit, however, I was actually choked up by these two commercials the first time I viewed them. I don't want to say too much about them or I'll ruin it for you but I've linked them below (which I never do) simply because they were so good.

Mio Animals

I love animals, especially giraffes. And I love innovation. And my husband really likes Mio. So why do I find these bizarre commercials so disturbing. I actually have to change the station when these come on and that is extremely unusual for ME (I'm a person who sometimes even watches commercials on DVR.)

The Mio animals, however, are so creepy I'm afraid they'll give me nightmares!!

Maybe it's because they are so elongated and instead of being humanized animals they look like some sort of alien hybrid. They just make me shudder!

These are exactly the kind of original ingenious commercials I usually love so I can't quite figure out why I find them as abhorrent as I do. Maybe it's because I love the naturalness of animals and that is completely lost in this animated concoction that populates these commercials. It's like they have dragged animal character down to the most trite human levels. No wonder it gives me nightmares. No self respecting animal would ever sink as low as a human!

Sexy Librarian

There are two versions of this particular commercial: the older longer one, and the newer shorter one. The shorter one is sort of boring and forgettable. What makes this commercial sorta rock was seeing the husband and salesperson's reaction to her sexy librarian speech. It seemed as if both were entranced making the commercial extra racy as the sales associate was same sex. Maybe they decided later that this was too x-rated a concept for their commercial but the short watered down version is boring comparatively.

Whoever the actress is achieves the perfect balance of wholesome and hot so that she doesn't come off cheap or porn-y but instead like a "regular gal" just goofing around with the possibilities. I think this is what gives the ad so much charm.

Wish they'd go back to the long version!
